Abstract Recent systematic numerical studies of strongly correlated fermions and bosons in lattice systems with topological flat bands, have established a new class of exotic Abelian and non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall effect. Such intriguing fractionalization effect, without Landau levels and without external magnetic field, is called fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect, defines a class of fractional topological phases, also known as fractional Chern insulators (FCIs). This FCI/FQAH research area has stimulated a lot of recent research activities and has also been widely concerned. In this talk, I will introduce our series of works done with collaborators in this area: the bosonic FCI/FQAH states; the non-Abelian FCI/FQAH states; the high-Chern-number FCI/FQAH states; edge excitations in FCI/FQAH states; wave functions for FCI/FQAH states; and the FCI/FQAH states in singular geometries.
