Seminar Given by Du Guanghua

On November 16, 2018, Du Guanghua, the director of the Heavy Ion Microbeam Research Group of the Institute of Modern Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a lecture titled “The Application of High-energy Heavy Ion Microbeams in Micro-Nano Spheres” in conference room 3016 of the lecture hall in Gezhi Building. Mr. Du was invited by the School of Physical Science and Technology and the Cuiying Honors College to present his report.

During his report, Mr. Du first introduced high-energy heavy-ion microbeams and high-energy deposition of heavy-ion beams along their tracks to produce nanoscale structural damage and modification in solid materials. This research can be widely used in the production of nanopores and micro-nano materials. Mr. Du also introduced the HIRFL high-energy microbeam device, which can minimize the focus of GeV high-energy heavy-ion beams to the micrometer scale, providing a unique single-ion precision control technology for the application of heavy-ion beams in micro-nano spheres. Mr. Du finally introduced the PET single nanopore prepared by HIRFL microbeam precision irradiation technology. Through their research, Mr. Du and his team determined the reversibly modifiable relationship between ion valence state and nanoporous ion rectification and surface charge polarity, which allowed them to have successfully prepared nanopores controlled by magnetic field. A multilayer composite nanopore was initially prepared for DNA sequencing studies.

After the report, the faculty and students had heated and extensive exchanges with Prof. Du Guanghua on their respective issues of interest. The report lasted nearly two hours. Discussions were very productive.
