Seminar Given by Pau Amaro Seoane

On August 28, 2018, research Pau Amaro Seoane from the Autonomous University of Barcelona visited Lanzhou University and presented a report entitled “Relativistic mergers of black hole binaries have (1) large, similar masses, (2) low spins and (3) are circular” at conference room 525 of lecture hall in Qiyun Building. Mr. Seoane was also a visiting scholar at the Morningside Mathematical Center of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the Covey Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University. He was invited by the School of Physical Science and Technology and the Cuiying Honors College to make his report.

The report was hosted by Professor Liu Yuxiao, Associate Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology. Faculty and students from the School of Physical Science and Technology and the Cuiying Honors College attended the lecture.

Researcher Pau Amaro Seoane is engaged in the astronomical field of gravitational waves. He has long been concerned with the astrophysical processes related to gravitational waves, especially the formation, evolution and related properties of double black or double dense star systems as gravitational waves. Together with his colleague Carlos Sopuerta of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he led the EMRI (Extreme-Mass Ratio Inspiral) working group in the LISA Alliance of the International Space Gravitational Wave Detection Program.

In his report, Prof. Pau Amaro Seoane introduced his research work with collaborators on the gravitational waves induced by the merger of double black holes. Their research findings showed that the detection of gravitational wave source might be possible if, in a merger incident, the double black holes had an equally large mass, black hole spins were slow, and the misalignment of the two holes in orbit was minor. These findings were quickly confirmed by the gravitational wave signals detected by LIGO.

After the report, Prof. Pau Amaro Seoane answered the questions of the teachers and students and exchanged ideas. After the report, he held a discussion and further exchanges with Professor Liu Yuxiao's research team and agreed to cooperate on research in the gravitational wave in the future.
